Problem: New products are continuously being designed by
engineers all over the world.
Collaboration is an integral part of the process by which these engineers develop a particular design.
Once the design process has been completed, documentation is compiled for
each product. This documentation describes all of the physical aspects
of the product for future reference. However, the documentation is
deficient in explaining why the engineers choose to make any particular
decisions during development of that product. Any future engineers
wishing to build upon the same product are at a disadvantage because they
must now invest time and money into rediscovering why
the original engineers designed the product a particular way. Several
resources could have been better utilized if the design rationale
of the original engineers would have been archived in some sort of repository
for future reference.
